Whether short and stopping at the wrist or dramatically long and going up higher than the elbow, we have a lot of fashion-forward gloves to fit all kinds of taste preferences. Hey, if you're like a lot of trend-savvy shoppers out there, you'll find that it's useful to have multiple pairs to accommodate different looks. In the meantime, read on to learn more about why gloves are so awesome and how to style yours.

History

In the 16th Century, Queen Elizabeth I was known for wearing richly embroidered and jeweled gloves. Her Majesty was even known for wearing them while she had an audience, then slowly removing them to draw attention to her hands (which were allegedly very nice and well-manicured for the time). Gloves date back way further than this era, of course, but the point is that Elizabeth I was not just the queen of England, but a queen of fashion if there ever was one.

Fashion gloves found their way into the non-royal masses later on, in the 1700s, when short sleeves became popular on dresses and women's blouses. Sometimes long gloves were used here to go all the way up to the sleeve, and other times they were short and dainty. Over the next couple of centuries, gloves remained a fashion staple for whenever women stepped outside their homes. In the late 1800s and early 1900s, long dressy evening gloves or "opera gloves" were incredibly popular and a must for any formal attire.

Jump forward to the 1980s, and pop music queen Madonna made her own mark as fashion royalty with accessories like her short, black lace gloves (emphasized with multiple bracelets, of course). Coming in both regular and fingerless varieties, lace gloves remained popular for the rest of the decade. Other performers of the time also helped promote the effortless chic look of gloves. From the white military-inspired gloves of Freddie Mercury to Michael Jackson's bedazzled one-handed style and Joan Jett's striking black leather pair, gloves managed to be a striking cry of individualism while at the same time making it seem like the wearer wasn't even trying that hard.

So what about gloves today? In some ways, gloves haven't changed much. We still have gloves in varying materials and lengths, including those that are meant more for fashion purposes while warmer varieties are for practical ones. Even so, more recent decades have also seen a rise in fingerless gloves among both women and men (largely thanks to the use of smartphones and other daily touch screens).

Glove Colors

Black

The great thing about black gloves is that they go with truly any outfit. Pair with light colors to add striking contrast to your look. or go all dark and chic. If you want to go bold and channel your inner Joan Jett, opt for a pair in black leather.

Dark Grey

This is a classic color for gloves, falling somewhere between the standard look of black and other colors that are harder to match with outfits. Dark grey gloves also have the ability to be paired with just about any color, though we think they particularly look great with both white and black jackets.

Brown

There's something both elegant and rugged about brown gloves, regardless of their actual style of material. Brown gloves say that you're ready for whatever the day may bring, and you'll look good while doing it. Many people naturally pair brown gloves with brown jackets, but we suggest wearing them with a contrasting color instead, like black or light beige. This will make your overall look pop.

Forzieri Designer Women's Gloves, Women's Tan Perforated Italian Leather Driving Gloves

$138.00

Forzieri offers classic-style gloves with a twist-- small embellishments or hidden pops of color. We especially love their gloves with contrasting colors found in between the fingertips, and with most styles in leather or faux leather, it's hard not to look effortlessly cool here.

UGG

Once known just for their footwear, UGG offers a suprising amount of glove options. These gloves are a bit bulkier than other brands, and because of this they are extra cozy for your hands. It's also hard not to like the unique stitching patterns, buttons and even the occasional sparkly option in this collection.

Gucci

Putting your hands inside a good pair of Gucci gloves is like wrapping them up in love itself. It's just impossible not to feel good when your hands look this stylish. And with options ranging from floral lace to cashmere and leather, there's something in this collection for everyone.

How to Style Gloves

If you want to draw the most attention possible to your awesome pair of gloves, wear them with a jacket or top that has short or cropped sleeves (either way, you don't want the sleeves extending all the way to your wrist). And while the 1980s are long over, it still never hurts to add in a nice bracelet or two. Don't overdo it though, or you risk making your hands and wrists look clunky. This is especially true if you have gloves with embellishments on them, as these look stylish enough on their own.

Whether or not your gloves have open fingers will also determine what kind of outfit you should wear with them. Try pairing these gloves with more form-fitting sleeves and jackets in order to achieve a more streamlined, classy look.

If you're going for dress gloves, remember that the length of the glove should correspond with the length of the dress. Longer gloves usually work best when paired with long (preferably flowing) gowns, while short ones pair well with shorter dresses and skirts.

Trends

Although gloves have never really gone away, they are definitely re-surging as more fashionable than practical. Gloves made numerous runway appearances in both 2017 and 2018, and it seems that more designers are picking up on the fact that dress gloves are once again becoming cool. Last year, Vogue even did a whole slideshow on their website called "Glove Love", showcasing this accessory in multiple new designer collections.

Gloves and Modern Celebs

Much like past decades, today's glove trends are being very much shaped by famous figures. Celebrities like Rihanna and Cardi B have been spotted at red carpet events in full elbow-length gloves, suggesting a mainstream return to opera gloves as formal outfit accessories. Then of course there's rapper Azealia Banks, who is known for being rarely without a pair of gloves on during a photo shoot or public appearance.

Where Gloves Are Headed

Unless another invention comes along that allows people to maintain use of their hands while keeping them warm in cold air, the truth is that gloves aren't going anywhere. Yes, warm-weather gloves will always be fashionable. As for those strictly for style purposes, well, we've already seen that they're making a return. Personally, we think this would be awesome because dress gloves are just about as classy and elegant as it gets.

Having said that, we won't be surprised if we start seeing more fingerless (or at least slit-tip) versions of these popping up soon. After all, we do love our phones.
