Who doesn't love a good pair of socks? The sock is one accessory that definitely will always be in style due to its practicality, even though it may change in size, shape and color from time to time. If you're like most people, you probably already have a variety of socks in your wardrobe in order to fit different intentions and outfit needs. On the other hand, if you're looking to shake up your sock collection with some new variety, that's what we're here for.

Whether they're for casual, athletic or dress use, we have a lot of different socks to choose from. To help you figure out exactly what you're looking for, here's some fun info on sock history and the different styles we have today.

History

In 1938, socks underwent an important change. The introduction of nylon into the industrial world meant that garments like socks no longer had to be made from just one material. The addition of nylon to other fabrics meant that socks could be more flexible and durable than ever. This lead to more varied styles and socks actually taking on a sense of fashion. One of the most notable is the 1940s and 1950s "Bobby Sock" in white or pastel colors with a ruffled (often lace) top. Of course, many women and girls wore this sock over tights or hosiery in order to not go entirely bare legged.

The 1960s and 1970s saw the rise of athletic socks as everyday wear, particularly tall striped tube socks (thanks to proud wearers like Farah Fawcett and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar). These gave way to the slouch socks of the 1980s and early 1990s. While movies like Clueless made knee-high socks fashionable among young women, the rest of the mainstream made the gradual shift toward more subdued, non-statement socks. The early 2000s continued to be pretty tame, albeit with some fun colors here and there.

Interestingly, the 2010s have nevertheless seen an explosion of funky-patterned socks with attitude. They're trendy among both men and women, and even top designers have taken notice. Today's socks can be found in just about every color imaginable, and for many, they just might be the most fun part of an outfit.

Cut

Crew

Crew cut socks are a traditional cut style that sits at the mid-calf, that is, a little under halfway between your ankle and knee. This cut works great with booties and underneath all kinds of pants.

Ankle

Ankle socks are among the most popular sock cut of all because they sit comfortably right above or right on the ankle. They work with all kinds of shoes, especially when it comes to athletic wear.

Top Sock Colors

Black

Black socks work wonderfully with black shoes, which is great when you're worried about clashing socks ruining the look of a dress shoe. They also look great with any boot style.

Beige

The reason for wearing beige socks is simple-- blend them in with your ankles as much as possible. This allows the rest of your outfit to be shown off.

White

The classic white sock is still very popular. After all, it goes with everything!

Light Blue

There's just something about light blue socks that give feet a fresh and airy feel.

Red

They hide under shoes and pants on most days, so many people don't even worry about wearing a color that doesn't go with the rest of their outfit. Whether red socks actually go with today's clothes or not, we still really want them.

A lot of the best athletic socks come from Adidas. You don't need to be an athlete to wear them, but you'll look amazing like one!

American Eagle Outfitters

For some classically fun patterns and some neat bulk sets, look no further than American Eagle socks. They also have a great selection of no-show socks that sit well below the ankle.

Trends

Graphic socks and those with fun slogans and attitude statements continue to be very popular among the mainstream. While it's unclear just how long these will remain in style (for now, it definitely seems like they're no going anywhere), one thing is certain: fleece socks are definitely going to be your cozy go-to for many cold seasons to come.

Socks and Celebs

Celebrities on all sides of the spectrum, from Ellen DeGeneres to Dwayne Wade, have been photographed showing off their crazy-colored socks that don't necessarily go with the rest of their outfits. That said, models like Hailey Baldwin seem to prefer a cleaner look for everyday styles that regularly includes beige and white socks.

What's Next For Socks?

These days, socks seem to be in a bit of a cycle. During colder months, people wear their funkier socks because they are hidden from general view, while in warmer months they stick to solid, neutral colors and low cuts. Do we see this changing anytime soon? Not necessarily. And unless you're going to a theme party, don't expect Bobby socks to come back anytime soon.
